Serial Numbers and Dates (Export)
Finding out the exact date of manufacture of your Squier JV guitar is not as straight forward as you may think. Having carried out a 'date of manufacture' study of these guitars over a two year period, a significant number of neck date (the only thing you can be sure of) and serial number mismatches were found (possibly partly due to the stocking up of necks prior to, or even after body and neckplate manufacture, and the possibility that stamped neckplates may have been placed in a container with the earliest numbers first, with the resulting situation where the first numbers are the last to be fitted to a guitar) but for the most part they do seem to follow a trend, which is shown below.
The five digit JV numbers started at JV0xxxx, up to JV9xxxx, but it must be remembered that the 'JV' pre-fix found it's way onto a lot of 'Squier' and 'Fender' guitars intended only for domestic Japanese distribution, with some other models, ie; some early (fall of 83) SQ models and 'Contemporary series' models. This now gives us some idea of the "relatively" few export Squier JV spec. guitars around.
It has been said that only some 1700 or so first issue 'Fender logo' Squier guitars were ever produced for export, with around (approx) 200 guitars reaching the shores of the UK. This is a "rumour" that I have heard on a few occations (I also recall a magazine article on the subject a long while ago, although I cannot remember exactly where.....unfortunately!). Though I have no proof to substantiate this claim, it is interesting nontheless.

Neckplate JV00011 is fitted to a '62 vintage' Squier JV Jazz Bass (neck date 4-26-82). This guitar is featured in the "50 Years of Fender" book by Tony Bacon, page 81. (Published by Balafon Books ISBN 0-87930-621-1) Also see the JV Jazz Bass page on this site. Assuming that neckplates JV00003 to JV00010 are still in the same collection shown above, it would be natural to assume that Jazz Bass JV00011 is the earliest numbered JV Instrument (a Squier series model!).
The earliest Squier JV neck date encountered by this site is (written) 4-23-82, pencilled onto the neck heel of a '52 vintage' - 'Fender logo' (Squier series) Telecaster.
The earliest pencilled 'Fender' JV neck date known by this site is (written) 4-12-82 and is a '57 vintage Stratocaster, JV01994.
